Anouk with me?

I love Anouk.

anoukBEAUTY.jpg

And I love Kate and her designs.

So, when I saw that Leigh of Woolflowers wanted to make Anouk, too, I decided to start a knit-along. Leigh is game, and Kate is going to knit Anouk again, also - maybe even in a new colorway.... Oooohhhh la la!

Now I know I'm cheating a little, because I have already done a little work on my Anouk, but this puts me in a position to tell everyone about the project and yammer on about how wonderful every little detail is before you get there.

So, here are the details: You can find the pattern here at Knitty. The yarn is Cascade Pima Tencel, which can be purchased from my favorite knitting men, Matt and Rob of Threadbear. It's a common guage and you can probably get a substitute if you want, but I recommend the real thing. As I've said before, Pima Tencel is like butta - soft as a baby's bottom and twice as pretty, in gorgeous, vibrant colors. It's sheer joy to work with this yarn.

No real rules. Sign up at the bottom of this entry in the comments section, and send me a picture at the end that is of your little darling (borrowed, as in my case, or born) in her lovely Anouk. Finish in about a year, and totally enjoy yourself! I'll put up a button eventually..... :)

In Other News.... Matt finished my Charlotte colorway:

Juliacolorway.jpg

Isn't it beautiful? Just what I wanted. See? Good things DO come to those who wait. There's still a backlog at Threadbear of 2-3 weeks, but they're beginning to move through and the results (and value!) are well worth it. Almost everyone in my Knit-Behind has a Threadbear colorway and they're all beautiful and unique. (I'll do a post later on highlighting the gorgeous color schemes.) Now I just have to wait for the post to bring Charlotte to my door...

P.S. Notice the snazzy new Knit-Behind Button? A little gift from Matt. Colorway and a button - what a guy!

I finished an Anouk for my daughter's first birthday! I did the 18 month size, and it's a bit big on her, but now she can wear it next spring too. I used Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece, and I made tulips instead of poppies (seemed to go better with the pink).

I've finished Anouk! Used the Cascade Pima Tencel - I love this pattern!

Michelle, it's adorable! I love it when we get to the the recipient in her Anouk. So cute. I've linked to your page so others can see it, too!

I am done!! Take a look at the photo of my finished Anouk, and of my niece wearing it!!

Brooke, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you either have to get a thicker yarn or revise the pattern for your guage. An extra stitch can throw things off badly, and you have a difference of 3.5 sts. If you want the Pima Tencel, try contacting Threadbear. They carry it and from what I've heard they'll ship overseas. The yarn itself is very cheap, so even with shipping it shouldn't be bad. If you have a lot of the yarn you swatched with you could try doubling it - there's a chance you'll make guage that way. I don't think that it's a terribly difficult pattern to modify, but you'd need to have some knowledge to do so. If you are a new knitter, find a way to make guage instead!

I just found this pattern online and would like to start it as soon as possible. I live in Europe (like the designer, I guess) so can't find the yarn required. I have a beautiful yarn, 100% mercerized cotton, but the gauge isn't correct when I use size #6 needles. I can't really use larger needles because my swatch is as loose as I would want it...I don't want it any looser of a knit. Any ideas on what to do? Do I need to find a bigger yarn? Or can I adjust the pattern...scared to do that on my own! My swatch is about 22.5 st/4 in. instead of 18. Any help would be very appreciated!

Hello, I would love to join the Anouk Knit-Along. I am a virgin knit-alonger. But I have been working on the Anouk for a few months for my niece's 1st birthday. I have the front and back bodice and skirt done and so far it looks great. When I started I did not know where to find the Pima Tencel (now I do- I feel much more connected already :-) So I substituted with Cotton Classics 100% Mercersied Cotton, which is knitting up nicely.

I had almost finished the Anouks I was making before finding this. . . I was hoping I could still share my pictures, though!

Posted by: Lindsey at July 13, 2004 08:45 PM

Hmmm... last time I posted I left my screen name (fathom) instead of my actual name. This may be a bad sign. So hard to carry on this dual identity!

I am almost done! Here is a photo of the pieces being blocked:

I am not sure why the picture looks like one side is so much shorter than the other-- I swear they are the same size. Once I find some appropriate little buttons it will be all done. I would have preferred to do it in flashier colors but my friends are pretty traditional. I thought they would prefer a boring old pastel more than the original cool color combo. It still looks cute as the dickens though!

One of the members of my local knitting group just finished a REALLY cute version of Anouk. (Her baby is pretty darn cute too!) You can see it here: http://www.purlygirls.org/index.php?p=751

I thought I would post again and tell everyone how much I am enjoying making my Anouk. I am really plugging along on it, and have finished the back, one pocket, and half of the front. I am making it in Lion Brand Cotton Ease, since that is such a soft yet sturdy yarn. It looks great!

Posted by: emily at June 30, 2004 08:38 AM

My good friend just had an adorable baby girl named Sophia. I have already knitted little Sophia some newborn booties and a little hat, but seeing all the lovely versions of Anouk in your gallery I am going to have to make one too! Maybe I will be a little bit behind everyone else, but can I be in the knitalong too?

Posted by: emily at June 18, 2004 12:29 PM

Almost done! You can see my Anouk at my website www.glacia.blogspot.com.

Need to sew it up and block (which I've never done before, but what the heck.)

Hey - I'm coming along on my Anouk. You can see some shots post blocking on my site - http://nikatayknits.typepad.com/nikatayknits/

I just adore this pattern! Way to go Kate!

I did a bigger chart on excel of the intarsia pockets. If anyone wants a copy, send me an email neecolita@hotmail.com

My niece had a baby girl on friday, so if her sister doesn't fit into Anouk, we can wait until the new one grows into it.

I finished all the pieces, I just need to decorate the pockets and sew all the pieces together.

Photo hopefully on Thursday.

Hi,

I am a Swedish knitter currently without a blog. I recently discovered the Anouk pattern and I just love it. Unfortunately I can't get hold of the Pima Tencel here in Sweden so I am curious if you have any advise on yarn substitutes?

What is the correct gauge for Pima Tencel? I read 18 sts/4 inches in the pattern, but 20 sts/4 inches on Cascade Yarns website. Plese help me, I really want to make this extremely cute dress.

I hope it's not too late to sign up for Anouk knitalong. I too am a virgin to knitalong so I hope I do this right.

I have it about 1/2 done. I ended up switching the orange with the green because I used a nice yarn which unfortunately is discontinued and I couldn't find more than one ball of orange.

I'm hoping my great niece will be able to fit into it.

Not that you need another Nicole, but my gosh I've been in love with this pattern since I saw it... but I thought no, it's summer, I'm in LA. Also do I knit it for the 1 year old I know, the infant ready to pop out of my boss' wife, or my cute English bulldog, Petunia? So I avoided it. But now that I found this, it seems destiny has intervened and I must make Anouk!

Posted by: Nicol at May 20, 2004 02:55 PM

Sign me up! I am so excited that so many people love this dress! I think it's adorable and plus little Anouk is adorable, such a sweet little girl! I have chosen Lana Grossa Bingo which is a Merino Wool. I am so excited to knit-a-long with you all!

Posted by: nicole from boston at May 18, 2004 09:02 AM

I've FINALLY started after days and maybe even weeks of torture, staring at the yarn for Anouk but trying to finish up an old project. So yesterday instead of doing all of this work-related stuff, I got sucked into a few hours of anouk - guilty pleasures! I'm absolutely loving it. I'm loving the Samoa yarn and have sworn to do all future projects in it. At least for this week. I'm using purple instead of orange and the color combo is really nice.

Posted by: Rachel at May 17, 2004 03:17 PM

Well,

I'm stalled out, I can't decide which color pocket & flower to use. I also need to weave in the ends ( I procrastinate when it comes to finishing...) But girl, is this thing cute! Kate, I love your pattern! I'll try to post some photos....

Is it to late for the knit along? I would love to join.

Posted by: Cathy at May 12, 2004 07:37 AM

I would love to anouk-along with you all! I started the 6mo size using mission falls 1824 cotton. (LYS didn't have the pimatencel). I started this week, and it is just flying along.

I think I came across one error for the 6 mo size; For the neck shaping, I think it should be "work 13 stitches" (rather than 15) or else the neck line will be asymetrical.

happy knitting!

I've been knitting for a few months now and am addicted. I'm working on the Anouk pinafore in a different colorway and with a slight change in the button closure at the top. I'll post a picture when I'm done.

Posted by: Liz at May 7, 2004 01:38 PM

I'm in! I've only been knitting for a few months, so this is my first knit-along (and my first wearable garment that isn't a scarf).

My friend and his wife are having a baby girl in July, so I'm making Anouk for her/them.

I'm making it all one colour, in an off-white wool. I think I'll make the pockets yellow with pink or purple flowers -- I'm not quite there yet.

I've started Anouk, but I've only got a few inches done -- I'm going very slowly because I want it to be perfect.

Posted by: Terri at May 5, 2004 07:32 AM

I just got my yarn and started! The pima tencel knits so nicely! I am using size 6 straight needles -- some of the old metal kind. (my mom found a whole bundle of them at a thrift shop).

When the pattern says decrease using k2tog on one side and ssk on the other does it mean skp?

Posted by: Nicole at May 4, 2004 01:32 PM

I'm a knit-a-long virgin, but I'd love to join you. I've already bought the yarn. I'm trying it with Samoa (in purple with yellow pockets, pink flowers, and green stems/grass). I'm thinking I'll try to start this weekend, but I have to finish that tank from the cover of Vogue first. It's beautiful!

I'm confused what needles I should start with. Anyone started already?

Posted by: Rachel at May 3, 2004 03:44 PM

I would love to join your knit-a-long! I am making Anouk in Microspun (a lovely yellow instead of the orange and a lighter green; there are pictures on my blog) although I am having gauge issues. I am going to re-do my swatch to see if I was screwing up somehow, but if not I have started figuring out the math to the gauge I am getting.

Posted by: Nancy at May 3, 2004 09:22 AM

Thanks for the suggestion -- I will check out Threadbear! I am looking forward to getting this started -- just want to finish the skirt I am working on. (I love the skirt you have posted!) I also made a URL correction above.
Thanks for signing me up!

Oh you colourway for Charlotte is gorgeous.
Count me in for the Anouk knitalong. Dear friend's daughter just had a baby girl so I'm anxious to get started.

Nicole - I'll sign you up! You should be able to substitute any yarn that is cotton and the right guage, and I LOVE Elann, but honestly, when Threadbear has Pima Tencel at $4.32 a skein I doubt you'll find a deal that is much better. The Pima Tencel is a really special yarn. If you do substitute, let me know what you use and how it goes. Kate (the designer) is also going to substitute, since she's outside the U.S., and I'm sure she'll keep us posted, too!

I have been wanting to make this Anouk dress for a friend's little girl since I saw it. Sign me up for the knitalong. I will start looking for my yarn. Any elann substitution suggestions?

Posted by: Nicole at April 28, 2004 02:56 PM

Well I added Kate's designs to my favourits, what a cute bunny. I really would like to make Anouk, as it's totatly cute...but not yet as I have something else lined up...perhaps in a mos. time. I don't have my own daughter yet, I have a son, but my friends are expecting a baby girl in May, so perhaps for them. The baby in the photo is just adoreable!

Posted by: Orli at April 25, 2004 04:02 AM

Anouk is such a cute pattern! I'd like to knit it for my little girl :)

Posted by: Amy at April 24, 2004 06:04 PM

Count me in on this one too. I'd been eyeing it for a friend of mine. I figure a bit of positive thinking will help her cause for a girl.

Posted by: Christina at April 24, 2004 06:01 PM

your Anouk button is darling! Thanks for starting up the knitalong--my yarn just came in this week and it's so soft.

Posted by: Leigh at April 24, 2004 05:13 PM

I've made 3 buttons. I just couldn't decide. They're in my blog. Can you believe this is my first knit along?!

Posted by: kate at April 23, 2004 04:31 PM

I just this morning told Matt I was willing to keep awaiting my custom colors (altho I am now tempted by the spotty one Rob posted) ~ yours are gorgeous and remind me what a genius he is. I may be the behindest, but it'll be worth the wait.

Posted by: maggi at April 23, 2004 10:03 AM

I'm up for the Anouk along. I can't resist making the dress even though I only have a 50% chance of having a girl, I'm sure I'll find a good home for it should I happen to have a boy. I'll be starting Charlotte at some point over the next couple of months as well so may even join your knitbehind...

Posted by: Kerrie at April 23, 2004 07:43 AM

Count me in for Anouk! This will be my second time around. I'm ready to start. Is there a starting date or should I just go ahead? I'll come back for the button.

Posted by: Marie at April 23, 2004 07:26 AM

The colorway is absolutely beautiful. I've yet to see bad one that Matt & Rob put together. I am already thinking of my next colorway when I finish this one. I can't wait to see everyone else's too.

Posted by: Christina at April 23, 2004 06:30 AM

Your Charlotte's web colours are indeed fab! I have now received my Koigu from Matt & Rob. I'm doing a single colour version but the colour is so lovely (p126) that I'm really excited!! It's going to be perfect for my friend's birthday. Now I just have to work out out how the pattern goes....
