Stealth Knit: Lace Leaf Pullover

Admit it. You know you've done it, too. You have several beautiful things on the needles, many of them gifts, or items that have just been lingering too long that you need to finish, and yet you look them over and nothing appeals. You realize after a few days that you have stopped knitting out of sheer avoidance of these projects. And you think to yourself:

"Self - I need a little shot in the arm. Something to get me back on track, put the umph back in my crafting. I need an elicit knit."

And just at that moment, in comes the stealth knit. It's the project that you've been dying to knit, but have for some reason been depriving yourself of. You work on it in a flurry of ecstacy. You are so devoted to it that it is well on it's way to being a finished object before it even hits the sidebar. It is amazing. It makes you forget about all those new-born babies and little people you really should be knitting Christmas presents for and the charity socks and every obligation that you can imagine. It is the best you've ever had.

Best of all, it is not a midlife crisis. It is a Lace Leaf Pullover:

LaceLeaf 001.jpg I am a stealth knit reposing in the garden. Beware my allure.

I realize that this lovely variegated yarn is not, perhaps, the best fiber to show off the beauty which is the Lace Leaf Pullover, but I'm willing to take that risk. The yarn is this wonderful lovely soft stuff called Freedom Wool that I picked up in Cleveland for $4.50 a skein when I was there for my girl's-weekend-slash-baby-shower-extravaganza at the beginning of October. It is the only yarn I have that can be knit on size 13 needles (and I have a lot of yarn), and I love it and that's the way it's gonna be. Plus I think that this particular lace motif is bold enough to stand up to a variegated, if not quite bold enough to absolutely shine:

LaceLeaf 008.jpg What do you think? Can you see the leaves? If not, I don't want to know!

Anyhoo.... It's all out in the open now. I took a stealth knit last night. It was great and I don't regret it.

In addition to sneaking in a little extra time with my Lace Leaf, inspired by this post, I also spent a little extra time with my camera over lunch.

This is has been one of the many beautiful days that reminds me how lucky I am to live where I do and to do what I do. I have time to smell the roses (both literally and figuratively) and I have many wonderful roses and other flowers to smell. So, for all of you who enjoy a little photography, here are some more pictures from my lunchtime garden. Enjoy!

Perfect name -- elicit knit! Love the colors. You just knit your heart out girl 'cause it'll look great on you.

I know why you were so moved though (as other SoCal knitters do) --we finally got a touch of sweater weather! I want to finish mine before the predicted Santa Ana next week kills all desire to handle wool.

What a beautiful post today!

(I *definitely* see leaves!)

Thanks for your encouraging words the other day, I was in such a funk!

River Colors Studio - Great shop, I agree. Next time you are in Cleveland I would also recommend going out to Birds of a Feather - Avon, Ohio. It's a combined quilt/knit shop. It is an old Barn fully refurbished with the entire first floor dedicated to quilting and the ENTIRE second floor for knitting. It's HUGE and the selection is GREAT! I think it might be a bit bigger than River Colors Studios. The 2 owners are friendly, their stocks do overlap but they each have enough 'different' stock to make it worth going to both shops. Just thought I'd let you in on another of my fave shops here in town.

p.s. I'm glad you enjoyed Great Lakes as well. If you are ever in town again, let me know and I'll give you the heads up on some other GREAT restaurants.

Gorgeous pullover and gorgeous yarn. Don't you just love the elicit stealth kni? Just the thing to pull you out of a knitting slump too!

Enjoy!

I am knitting the lace leaf too. I have one sleeve left. I think it looks great in the yarn you picked, and do think the leaves still stand out. I find the pattern a little odd, so I am looking forward to reading your perspective on it.

Just when I told myself I was cut off from any new yarn purchases, you had to go and show that beautiful yarn! I love the colorway - and the pattern BTW. I have it marked in my Interweave Knits. Right before I read your post I was just thinking I needed to start something fun, just for me, so I think I will.

I love everything about that sweater- the colors, the pattern, and the yarn- especially since touching it- I must have some! Just remember- not for the plane! ;)

Hi Julia,

Those leaves show up just fine. It's a great color match-up for a leaf concept, too. But what I like best so far is how the colors show up on the twisted rib. Kind of reminds me of how much fun you had with the Not Bob Marley's Grandmother's socks.

Cara - I think that means you are self-actualized - good for you!

Andrea - Can't wait to see yours, either. You always knit beautiful things.

Naomi - I do not know the name of that flower, but I will look for it. Those are some of my favorites to photograph. I have some really beautiful black and whites of those from Chicago's Garfield Conservatory.

Julia - The yarn is Twilley's Freedom Wool and I bought it at River Colors Studio in Cleveland. River Colors is a fabulous store and I highly recommend that you go there, but I don't think they'll have any more Freedom Wool unless they have re-ordered. They only had one bag each of two colorways, and my best friend and I bought it all. The price was too good. Cleveland is a fun city. Have you been there? If you get a chance check out Great Lakes Brewery Excellent beer and excellent food - not your typical brew pub!

Hi Julia,
You so accurately captured my thinking right now that I had to write. Only three more holiday projects to go but I really need to take a break and knit for me! I'm waiting for some yarn to arrive today that might just be the answer. And, I'm going to Cleveland this weekend to visit my knitting sister -- do you remember the name of the store that you got that fabulous yarn at? Just curious.

Oh, I am so jealous! I love that sweater. Can't wait to see more of your progress.

That is a great stealth knit - I just bought LoopdLoop and that's one sweater that is calling out to me, too. But I will pretend I have not read your blog, as I really DO need to get some Christmas presents done before I can allow a stealth knit to creep into my life. Plus, I am waiting to see how it looks on you - I am often wary of such bulky sweaters (hee hee).

That yarn is beautiful. Glad you decided to do some stealth knitting because I've been waiting to see a finished leaf pullover.

All of my knits are elicit. What does that say about me?

LOVE the yarn - I think it will look beautiful in that pattern - and anyway, if you love it, it works.

The leaves are finally changing around here - I may have to go take some me pictures soon. Your flowers are beautiful.

Nice use of the yarn...that stuff was scrumptious!

We are sitting under cloudy skies with snow expect in the next day or so...no roses here until next spring. Smell one for me!

It may be hard to see the leaf design but the yarn is so beautiful...why not go for it!?

ah-ha, i knew it! great minds think alike, i'm casting on for that pullover tonight. finally finished a swap-along shrug last night and then immediately swatched. i'm using rowan's polar and cannot wait to leave work and get started already.

anyhow, your yarn looks lovely - and the twisted rib really shines with that variegation.

i think you're right about the strength of the leaf motif - can't wait to see what your pullover will look like. ;)

Oh, man, everything I've done lately has been an elicit knit. Good to know I'm in such great company.

Posted by: marnie at November 2, 2005 04:43 PM

What's the flower in the first picture? I really like that image.

And, yes, I can see the lace leaves--they look fine.

Posted by: naomi at November 2, 2005 04:42 PM

Oh i am SO planning to make that sweater next autumn. Winter was all but over when I first saw the pattern and fell in love with it a few months ago. Your's looks gorgeous. Happy stealth knitting.

You naughty, naughty girl! It hurt so good didn't it?

Ok, I'm coming out of the closet too. I did the same thing today with a cardigan I've been having lustful thoughts over.

Ahhh. I feel better now.
