New Life for an Old Knit

CIMG6378.JPG

Pia makes her fall debut.
Those of you who have been reading my blog for a really, really long time, might just remember that I knit Pia from Rowan's Magazine 35. I loved knitting Pia, but once it was all done it was a bit roomy. I always intended to do something about this - either rip and revise or attempt to shrink it a bit in the dryer - but for some reason it never happened, which was quite sad given how much I had enjoyed making this top.

Then fall rolled around this year and I really, really wanted a cool vest to layer over tops and blouses. I have one vest prototype in the works and another in sketches and in my head, but both of those have been shelved to make way for Christmas items and a few things for publication, so it will be a while before those vests take woolen form.

Pia loves Townes.
Just by chance I was straightening up my closet and ran across Pia, which is knit in a wonderfully autumnal shade of green called "Fern". It was like a lightbulb went off in my head and I wondered aloud how it would look over one of my blouses with jeans. Viola! What a great combination! I am loving it, and suddenly a knit that has only rarely seen the light of day is getting worn about once a week. It's a favorite!

The best part is that I think there are several summer tops in my closet that can probably be worn this way. My citrus moon is more fitted, but the colors are the right palette, and I think it could work well over a more fitted long-sleeved shirt. I just had to share, because I'm guessing that many of you have made a knitted summer top that is just a little too big - it's almost a rite of passage in the knitting world. Why not re-purpose it and get something you really love?

I would never have thought to wear it that way! What a great idea. Too bad mine is knit in one of the melange colors. I don't think it would look good as a vest.

You're looking so *fine*. I love those moments when you suddenly look at something differently, thereby seeing/discovering a new use/meaning in it.

i have the opposite problem - a knitted summer top that is just a bit too small. ack! made out of that rowan paper yarn from a few seasons back.

but pia looks lovely lovely ~ and townes is appropriately appreciative. how's townes doing without caia? it must be hard for a cat to understand. snif.

That looks awesome! It looks like it was made just for that purpose!

Really kewl. one question though, is it warm enough...even here in Isarel i'm now in 2 layers of long sleeved...today it's a waffle l/s tea and a woolen cardigan over it...
mind you maybe now I can knit tanks...becaues wearing them like is okay...I don't right wearing tanks to the office not to mention that I typically freeze my arse off in the summer because of the a/c...what I do is I wear a tank under a deep v neck for a cool layer effect.

Lovely way to showcase a knitted tank during chilly Fall. Looks great on you!

That's a good idea and the look is just great!

Wow... tres chic! Looks wonderful that way!

Hello, sweet kitty!

She looks wonderful!

My Honeymoon Cami is a bit roomy on me, and I wear it with a shirt underneath.

Wow, Pia looks great over the long sleeved shirt. I like it best that way and it is very inspiring. The color is beautiful too.

This combo looks great. I've been searching all over for a nice little vest-y type thing. The new IK has a cute vest-y thing in it that might be right for work for me.

That's a great idea and I might try that with a couple of "vests"/summer tanks that I've made. Especialy once that always stretches out. Thanks!

Wonderful versatility! Sometimes it takes a "thinking beyond the box" moment to get an idea that really works. Bravo!

You're so clever. Looks fab!

(Hi Townes!)

I totally remember Pia . . .

Great re-purpose of Pia and it's PERFECT.

(Your hair looks lighter - it's lovely!)

I'm all for repurposing knits! Even better that it's a pattern that can't be purchased in *any* store. It looks great on you, Julia.

Pia works really well like that. I knit a Shapely Tank out of Silk Garden and I wear it as a vest.

I often pass on knitting little summer tanks because I need the support of real bra, and I just don't like the bra-strap showing look. But instead, I could make vests!

You look damn cute in it! Great autumnal color!

It is a fabulous vest, especially with the buckles.

Posted by: Lauren at November 6, 2006 08:09 AM

Wow, that's a great idea! I would never have thought of it but it looks fantastic. Thanks!

Excellent idea and it looks fabulous on you! It's such a modern look. Townes wants to get closer it looks like.

Oh yeah, I'm notoriously vest-crazy and have been known to repurpose summer tanks into fall vests. And now I have a HUGE confession to make right here on your comments--I gave away all my maternity clothes last month except my absolute favorite sweater tank. Well, it's knit in a tight rib and it turns out it makes a great non-maternity vest. So I've been wearing maternity clothes this fall and no one has noticed! That's pretty bad.

Oh man, I so love vests over button up tops.I have several vests that I bought at Target a while ago, but I've been thinking the same thing, that I need to design a few hand knit vests. Great minds, I guess.

Anyway, Pia looks great that way. Good call.

Hi Townes!
