The Outer Banks, North Carolina

I had a lovely weekend with my college girlfriends: knitting (the pink Marseilles back above is mine), quilting, drinking wine, soaking in a hot tub under the stars, goofing off in the surf. I'm so glad to have such wonderful people to surround myself with, if only once a year. Now it's back to the grind. Man, I miss that hot tub.

Looks like a slice of heaven!

Pulled my copy of Wildflowers of the Outer Banks off the shelf -- looks like your magic green leaves are Seaside Pennywort (Hydrocotyle bonariensis); Jockey's Ridge on the Sound side, Southern Shores dunes, highway edges Bodie Island to Hatteras. (Just typing that list makes me happy.) Does that match? Did you find Knitting Addiction in Southern Shores? (Great LYS away-from-home.) And a cool picture of that cotton field.

So happy that OBX was a blast- we have lived in Virginia for over two years now and still have to get there! Thanks for the inspiration.

Wow - there are so many new names here. Thanks for de-lurking guys!

I don't think I ever said that the water was warm. Personally, I didn't find it anywhere near warm enough to get in, but all of my friends did, and Ann got completely soaked. She's a little nutty, that one. :)

Glad you enjoyed the pictures. It was a great time.

Wow! The water is STILL that warm in NC in November? I would have never guessed. I'm with everyone else...what are those green leaves. Glad you had a great time!

Oh, the Outer Banks!!!! I love that place in the off season. It looks like you had fun!

Posted by: Mia at November 16, 2006 12:59 PM

Gorgeous photos! I could certainly use a fun weekend like that -- and a hot tub of my own :D Je t'adore pink Marseilles. I am glad you had fun!

Posted by: Tiffany at November 16, 2006 11:31 AM

before you edited the post to reflect the location, I figured it had to be the south east coast. where else would the water be warm enough for surfing (in a bikini!!) at this time of year? it looks like a good time was had by all. it such a great ritual for you to keep up with your girl friends! you go girl!

Posted by: lori z at November 16, 2006 10:31 AM

Yay, I'm so happy to see you happy and enjoying some girl time with your friends! I know how important that time is!

Thank you for the beautiful photos!!!
It looks like much fun and luck. Your Marseille sweater becomes great and the landscape of the Outer Banks...WOW. Knows I unfortunately only from movies. For example: *Message in A bottle!* Wonderful!

I love the Outer Banks. The beaches there taught me to love and get excited for going to the beach. I'm surprised it was warm enough to get in the water - probably still windy though. Boo, now I want to go.

I'm determined to stay de-lurked. ;) Your weekend looks like real fun! (and not to mention, beautiful as well!)

Such gorgeous pictures, especially the first one. That looks like inspiration for a Fair Isle, right there. Sounds like you had a lot of fun. Most of my college friends are here in SoCal... poopy.

Awwwww, now I want to be your college friend so I can go too! :)
It looks like a blast, and you deserve some rest.

i'd recognize the outer banks anywhere... my favorite spot in the world.

It looks like you had a lot of fun. Sounds great too. I'll get a vacation outside of maternity leave one of these years. :)

Hi guys, Elli is right. We went to North Carolina - the Outer Banks. It was quite an insane trip for a three-day weekend, but worth it for a full perfect day at the beach and a rainy morning of knitting. I'm not sure what kind of plant those leaves are. I think that the leaves must be connected under the sand, but only a single leaf pops to the surface at each spot. They were enchanting. Re-entry is rough. I'm awake at 4 am and asleep by 9 pm, which is off even for me.

Posted by: Julia at November 16, 2006 04:48 AM

Gorgeous photos! And my first thought when I saw the picture of you with your friends was... the look like little kids!! You look sooo happy.

Posted by: britt at November 16, 2006 04:37 AM

The photos, the landscape (where is this magical place?), and your friends all look spectacular; your Marseilles pullover looks too like it's going to be a stunning FO. Nice work.

PS: Good luck with your "re-entry" into the grind-- :)

My college roommates and I are doing that this weekend. I hope we have as much fun as your pictures make it looks like you're having!

Posted by: Laura at November 15, 2006 09:21 PM

One of my favorite places, really. Your pictures make me want to go, NOW!!

And what are those green leafy things?

Posted by: Donna at November 15, 2006 08:59 PM

Geez girl...did I miss you saying you were going to North Carolina? Sounds like a REALLY nice trip.

Posted by: Elli at November 15, 2006 07:30 PM

oh my, where did you go? and what are those green leaf thingies? I love that picture. Your college pals look fun, the whole photo montage looks like a great wine commercial or something... the life we all want to have.

Posted by: janel at November 15, 2006 06:04 PM

sounds like so much fun! i don't get to see my college friends, they live all over the world. it's so nice to have old friends!
