June 18, 2007Manly Cashmere Baby Booties: Pattern NotesI had originally planned to give my friend Julia something else (I know, scandalous!) with a pair of these manly booties, but my cross-stitching drive failed me and it just didn't happen. So instead, I whipped out a second pair of these manly cashmere booties, which are so well modeled by my friend Ellen's six-week old baby.
Pretty cute baby, no? Ellen and I had a nice, quiet day together on Saturday, sitting inside with the baby while the temperatures in Phoenix soared into the hundreds, and then spent the afternoon with friends at Julia's shower (no, not third person, another Julia! No babies here yet!) Ironically, I got a lot more cross-stitching done on this trip. I thought that I would be unable to finish my little project because I just didn't have the cross-stitch bug, but now it seems to have me interested. I'm so enamored of this cross-stitch project that I don't know if I'll give it away to the next sarcastically witty friend to become a mom or keep it for myself some day. As for pattern notes, here are the basics: Classic Cashmere Booties This is my go-to bootie pattern. I just love it. You can easily whip out an entire bootie in a single unproductive night, and if pressed it's not hard to make an entire pair in a single sitting. The "embroidered" primitive hearts are my own little addition to the pattern. I think they add something special. Last time I made the smallest size on US4's and they came out about the right size to fit a baby at 6 months. I made these on US3's so that they would fit a little earlier - maybe 3 months. They were slightly big on Ellen's little 6-week old, so that seems about right. I think as long as they fit sometime during the right season (which is essential in Arizona - there will be no summer booties!) it's okay. I've knit these before, so for more extensive pattern notes, check out this post. I leave you with this shot of the two pairs hanging out together on the flannel baby blanket that Ellen's mother hand-stitched for her: ![]() In classic cashmere booties | kiddie knits | main | other people's kids

The heart's are the perfect detail... Posted by: Edna Hart at June 30, 2007 12:11 PMThe booties are beautiful. I hope you are well. I figure you are just swamped in real life. Posted by: PICAdrienne at June 27, 2007 01:50 PMThey are so perfect! And one can never have enough booties, no matter what the temp is. Posted by: Dawn at June 19, 2007 05:26 AMG'day Julia from Down Under! I have had your blog bookmarked for sometime since I saw the Reversible Cable Scarf some time ago. I also have enjoyed your photos - particularly of Yosemite - as hubby and I visited Yosemite, SF, Phoenix and LA for a few weeks in 2005 - We actually saw our very first snow at Yosemite - so I think everyone else on the tour thought these mad Aussies who kept asking - is that ice or snow, every time we saw a suspicious patch were driving them a tad mad. Anyway p those booties are just gorgeous and just the thing for a friend of mine who is expecting! I have tried contacting KnitCafe for the Reversible Cable pattern - but have not had any success - understandable I guess as they are a commercial enterprise - and the pattern is not for sale and I am somewhat at a loss if they dont do mail order - I have also telephoned directly and have now totally given up on the idea of making such a great scarf. Even sadder given I have some merino/POSSUM mix yarn from New Zealand in a beautiful pink/mauve tone that would look fab in that pattern. Anyway, thanks for your interesting blog - love your photos and the patter! Cheers Liz I love the addition of the hearts, I just might go pull out my book and make some for my sis-n-law who is due next month! So Cute! Posted by: marcie at June 18, 2007 07:04 PMSebastian, you're a STAR of the blogosphere! The booties are even cuter in person than in these lovely photos. I may just try to overcome my loathing of yarn crafts to make a pair of these... Darling booties! That baby is too adorable. What a chunk! Amy Posted by: Amy at June 18, 2007 02:04 PMCouldn't be any cuter! And those booties she's wearing are pretty cute too. :) Thanks for the pattern review. Posted by: rachel at June 18, 2007 12:27 PMTucson isn't too far behind Phoenix in the temp. area. You guys probably were in an air conditioned place. We have something called a swamp cooler that can be so horrible sometimes. If we ever get ANY humidity whatsoever then we are just screwed! LOL Anyways. Those booties are just perfect! I have to make something for my cousin's baby (due in Oct.) and if it is a boy I think these would be just right. Glad you had a good time out here in the desert. I like your little project too. Keep it up. ~Viv Posted by: Aviva at June 18, 2007 12:17 PMAhhh, Phoenix. The seventh level of Hell. If I hear one more person, in my lifetime, say, "But it's a dry heat," I will lose it. :) Just kidding. Hope you had a blast in Phoenix.
