December 08, 2007Mishka is Finished!Well, I think it is.
I don't often do the infamous bathroom mirror shot, but this morning it's nippy and I have no desire to take photos of myself in a sleeveless shell in 40 degree weather. In my Chicago days I would have worn shorts on a day like today, but after living on the west coast for several years I've become a big puss! Taking these photos was a fun challenge. I got several good shots of my toiletries. I can highly recommend both lubriderm and secret clinical strength, which is why I featured them here. Ha! About the finished part. Almost. I'm still vacillating about the lower edge. The stitch pattern makes the bottom edge see-saw a little. I can't decide if I'm okay with that, because the piece drapes well, or if I want to slip stitch the edge. A slip stitch will make that edge stiffer and less resilient, which could be a bad thing. If I do it with a crochet hook a size larger I think it will help with drape, but I'm not sure that will do enough to straighten out the edge? Any thoughts? I also think I'm going to do one more round of blocking, perhaps on a hanger, to open up the lace. Posted by Julia at December 8, 2007 05:25 PMIn create along | designs | main | mishka

Mishka is lovely. I always thought you were younger then I...I'm 35. Posted by: Orli at December 17, 2007 02:08 AMI like the idea of a slightly wavy edge- it fits the feel of a draped shell to me. Love it! Posted by: Elspeth at December 10, 2007 05:48 AMI think it is beautiful! I can't really see the bottom edge, but the way you describe it I would leave it alone. It sounds like it lays well and the see-saw would be something great about it. Whatever you decide I'm sure will make it all the much better though. Posted by: Cathy at December 10, 2007 05:17 AMI love it! It is so pretty. I have been waiting to see it completed. I hope you are sharing the pattern because this would definitely be one of the first knits on my list for spring. Posted by: Lara at December 9, 2007 11:22 PMi've loved this since you first posted about it. so nice to see it finished or almost. it looks really lovely. i would say yes to a slip stitch around the edge. it doesn't take too long and is easy to remove if you don't like it. and i'm always in favor of more open lacework. It is SO nice to see you again. Really lovely shell, and I, too, would love to knit it, though I'm not nearly as long and lithe as you... Great job! Posted by: Lee Ann at December 9, 2007 05:08 PMBeautiful shell, Julia! And even your cramped, self photo shoots are wonderful. You have a gift for showing great details in your photos of your knits - much harder than it looks I think! As for the edge, I think it being a little wavy is okay and can be part of the design. If you're really bothered by it, a single crochet edge would be good - nothing too stiff. Posted by: connie at December 9, 2007 12:04 PMVery pretty! I love the fit. Posted by: orata at December 9, 2007 11:07 AMIt is a stunner. I'm impressed with the fit and the lack of bra gap on the underarm part (always a problem in my personal knitting!). It echos the waves of the ocean. Well done. Posted by: Earin at December 9, 2007 10:53 AMIt's beautiful, and it looks amazing on you...and the bathroom-as-photo-studio pics are adorable. *mwah!* Posted by: Nonnahs at December 9, 2007 10:02 AMIt's adorable! I think the edge echos the lovely wave pattern. I personally wouldn't change it, but you are the artist. Are you sharing this pattern? I'd love to knit it :) Posted by: Cassie at December 9, 2007 08:13 AMIt's adorable! I think the edge echos the lovely wave pattern. I personally wouldn't change it, but you are the artist. Are you sharing this pattern? I'd love to knit it :) Posted by: Cassie at December 9, 2007 08:13 AMIt's really lovely! The color is so warm and buttery, and the fit is so flattering on you. I'd imagine you'll get tons of wear of it out in California. Congrats! Posted by: mick at December 9, 2007 08:10 AMThank you girls! Hey Vicki, Definitely try the Secret Clinical! As an antiperspirant it's about the same as the others on the market, but it is incredible as a deodorant. If I shower at night and put it on before bed I can go to the gym the next morning (without re-applying it), work out hard for an hour, and come out smelling like a rose! Incredible. Plus its not perfumey (fresh scent, I think, in the blue wrapper), which is great because I hate it when one smell is merely camouflaged by another. Ick. xox, J Posted by: Julia at December 9, 2007 07:31 AMBeautiful! And, I like the edge the way it is. Rolling would be bad, but wavy is nice. Posted by: Laurel at December 9, 2007 07:23 AMVery cute! I like the see-saw bottom edge and it doesn't look like it's riding up. Posted by: monica at December 9, 2007 06:38 AMIt's very, very fabulous! Nice work!! Posted by: margene at December 9, 2007 06:18 AMMishka is beautiful! I've never seen any pattern like this with the vertical wave. It must be definitely interesting to knit! Congratulations! Posted by: Maryse at December 9, 2007 05:56 AMVery nice! It looks great on you and the design is lovely. It's hard to see the edge in your photos. Posted by: LaurieM at December 9, 2007 03:17 AMThe lace panels go side-to-side and as a result the bottom won't be straight. I think the beauty of it is the bit of ripple along the edge. It looks great on you, Julia, and the yellow is a nice pop of color in winter. Posted by: MJ at December 9, 2007 12:28 AMI love it!! Great pattern, and what a sunny color! Posted by: Allegra at December 8, 2007 10:37 PMOo! oo! oo! It's so pretty! I love it a lot. =D Posted by: Julia at December 8, 2007 09:22 PMI like it as is. It doesn't seem that it needs an additional edging, but of course, you knit it and you're the one who will wear it. You have to know if you will like as is. Posted by: Wanda at December 8, 2007 08:18 PMWow, Julia, that looks great! And thanks... I've been wondering whether to give Secret Clinical Strength a try. Julia, Holy crap that looks *gorgeous* on you! Hot damn. And that yarn is dreamy next to the skin, isn't it? Lovely, Julia! I'm going to withhold edging ideas until tomorrow and I see it in person! :) (Email me if you need me to bring extra yarn for you.) Posted by: Mary-Heather at December 8, 2007 07:14 PMFun photos and a lovely sweater! Posted by: Angie at December 8, 2007 07:10 PMoooo... nice, Julia. I love the pattern, just divine!
